Yes, it's somewhat of a time consuming issue/problem for every person who hasn't thoroughly researched (the end user does all the work again, scouring the internet for answers. *sigh*).

'I was under the impression that with a legal windows KEY I could install a like copy of windows 10 and activate it.'

Yes, with a legal Windows key, you sure can install W10 and activate it (before the year expiry), but not without somewhat of a process because a licensed W7 basically allows the one year free install of W10 onto your computer... Only as an upgrade first, then as a clean install.

The information that I had gathered is that you have two options:

1) Perform the upgrade onto W7, then fish out the 'new' generated key with 'productkey.vbs'. With that new generated key, you can go ahead and do a clean install with your Windows 10 disc.

2) Perform the upgrade onto W7, then Windows will allegedly recognize your computer specific hardware (motherboard, etc.), so you can reformat and do a clean install with your Windows 10 disc. Supposedly you simply skip the activation part because your W10 will activate itself after verifying your computer's hardware.

Either way, it's somewhat redundant because a user does both steps, but I specifically went with the better option 1 for the clean install because #2 seems sketchy without having a W10 key. To be blunt, both methods seem sketchy because what if I buy a used computer to upgrade next year (after the offer expired) and wish to transfer over my current legitimate W10? Well, Windows would obviously NOT recognize the hardware with option 2, so I'd be up the creek in a manner of speaking. I'm not sure option 1 would work either with the key being accepted onto a replacement computer, but I'd sooner have the W10 generated key in case I do have that option available. I suspect I'll be burnt when upgrading my computer after the W10 offer expires and I'll be stuck with no activation for a punishment for changing computer hardware configuration, then I'll just return back to W7 I guess.
