Hello,
I need help with the mission March of the Undead in the campaign Playing with Fire of the Armageddon's Blade xpac.
I've restarted the mission 3 times and I am simply overwhelmed... The AI has, at the end of month one, 5 hydras, 30 basilisks, 30 gorgons and a load of the smaller units... By flagging all dwellings in the near vicinity and getting all 3 castles and building them up the best I got were several hundred gnolls / archers, a hundred flies and thirty basilisks... this is simply a joke against what the AI has... magic does not make any difference either...
Waiting any longer is no option either, by half way into month two, the AI sends a hero with hundreds of basilsks, 50 gorgons and god knows what else...
How in the world do you beat this? Should I just rush to fight the AI a.s.a.p.?!
Btw, I can't help but note that while HOMM 3 is supposed to be some strategic genius of a game, the higher difficulty is mostly about rushing a map, otherwise you are overwhelmed... it feels kind of cheap... instead of thinking it's about acting ultra fast...

Hi, I can't remember how I beat this particular scenario, since it was quite some time ago. However I'll give you one tip that was extremely helpful to me in all the expansion's campaigns and might prove useful to you.
Heroes carry over. They carry over all their statistics and spells.
If you have a save of the previous scenario, just before it ended, then do NOT end it immediately. Instead take your hero and visit all map dwellings that offer permanent bonuses, especially primary abilities: (attack, defense, power, knowledge), secondary skills (if useful) and spells! (build all guilds up to level 5 and learn all those spells you can!). And of course XP too, though you should reach the cap anyway before that.
This way you'll have a much more powerful hero that could make all the difference. Even if your armies are weaker.

A year late, but nevertheless I'll tell you how I beat it (because I just finished it). I need help with the mission March of the Undead in the campaign Playing with Fire of the Armageddon's Blade xpac.

1. As ZFR pointed out, heroes carry over from previous scenarios. My heroes were all very strong from the beginning. Main hero had the following stats: 12 16 14 9 (Attack, Defense, Power, Knowledge). It also had very good secondary skills: Logistics, Offense, Earth Magic, Air Magic, Archery, Tactics, most of them at expert level. Her Chain lightining did 660 damage. The other 3 heroes had high Attack and Defense values (between 10 and 15).
2. On this map, both enemies had 2 towns right from the begining, so yes, you are right, you have to move fast. You can see the map here:http://www.ign.com/wikis/heroes-of-might-and-magic-iii-armageddons-blade/March_of_the_Undead. I flaged the dwellings in the near vicinity and quickly captured the neutral towns 1, 5 and 4.
3. Meanwhile, a seconday hero explored the zone north of town 1 where he found a shipyard. He bought a boat and landed near town 1. I moved most troops to main hero (Adrienne), she climbed aboard, crossed the sea and landed near town 2. My hero had only Gnolls, Lizard Warriors and Dragon Flies but I managed to capture the town easily. I dont remember exactly but I done this during second or third week.
4. In the next few turns I captured his second town (town nr.3).
5. The second enemy posed more trouble, because he kept coming from portals right near my towns, but my secondary heroes had very high skills and managed to win all battles while Adrienne went on and captured his towns.
That's it.
