Legend of the Galactic Heroes is a legendary anime among fans and until now it wasn’t available to watch in the West. The great news is that Hidive is now streaming this classic anime series online.

The series originally started as a series of novels by Yoshiki Tanaka, these were then later adapted into a series of movies and a very long running anime series.

The story is based around a century-long war between the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance. By the time we join the narrative, both sides are exhausted but unwilling to give up the fight.

However, there are two genius strategists on either side that have plans to finally end the war in a quick and decisive fashion. Much of the initial series and movies deal with their conflict and it makes for fascinating viewing.

This is because Tanaka went to a lot of effort to plan out the world setting for this story and did a great deal of work on making the strategies used in the many battles believable and coherent.

The problem with the series though was that it was utterly massive. It took the original production almost ten years to animate the 110 episodes of the series, not to mention the movies and other spin-offs. So for most Western anime distributors, the project was historically a daunting one.

The good news was that in back in 2015 Sentai Filmworks announced they had picked the series up and it seems that this new Hidive streaming release is linked to that. That said, we are still waiting on details for the home video release of the series but it seems that Sentai Filmworks is still listing it as a future release.

In any case, one of the most elusive and definitive animated works of the last thirty years is now finally available to watch online and that is a glorious thing to see.
